Prevention of Kidney Failure

Because kidney failure is hard to predict, it’s important that you do what you can to protect the health of your kidneys. If you have any kidney problems or other diseases that could result in kidney failure, you should work with your doctor to help manage the acute or chronic condition. Following your doctor’s advice and recommendations are extremely helpful and may help decrease your risk of kidney failure and get you a better prognosis.

Stop smoking
A variety of health problems can occur because of cigarette smoke; not to mention it can increase your chance of kidney failure. By quitting smoking, you can also lower your blood pressure, which is a leading factor in the prevention of kidney failure.

Control your blood pressure
High blood pressure puts strain on the heart and other blood vessels, which attributes to kidney damage. Sometimes doctors can prescribe drugs to help control your blood pressure. Or you could experiment with other remedies such as garlic supplements.  These supplements can help reduce blood pressure quickly, but hinders the blood's ability to form clots, so make sure you take them under medical supervision.

Eat a healthy diet
Food that is fresh and low in salt is crucial to a healthy diet. Try to avoid fatty foods and ask your dietitian and doctor for advice- they know what they are doing. Stop drinking alcohol. By cutting alcohol out of your life, or at least minimizing it greatly can make a huge difference to your kidneys function. Alcoholic beverages require your kidneys to work very hard. Drink plenty of water, about eight glasses each day. Damaged kidneys can still process water.

Don’t overdue medications
Instructions for over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) should be followed carefully. Taking doses that are too high may increase your risk of acute kidney failure.

Prevention of kidney failure may not be easy, especially if you have conditions that make you more at risk for developing kidney failure. Make sure to exercise; this keeps your heart and muscles strong and healthy. That way, you can more easily fight against kidney disease.
